Road freight is a critical component of the UK economy and national supply chains. Department for Transport evidence notes that more than four fifths of goods in the UK are transported by road, and that the road freight sector employs over 290,000 workers across more than 50,000 businesses and adds around £18 billion to the UK economy each year. Published freight statistics also show that road remains the dominant mode for domestic freight movement. In 2024, the UK moved 206 billion tonne kilometres of domestic freight, of which 82% was moved by road.
